CENTER THICKNESS
The peripheral curves can affect the
center thickness. If a lens is of low
minus power the center will be thicker
than the edge as is the case with plus
lens powers.
The reason that low minus lenses have
thicker centers is that the peripheral
curves cause removal of peripheral
material. In order to keep a required minimum edge thickness the center must be made thicker.
With RGP lenses the center is thicker than the edge with powers up to about -2.50 D.
The flatter and/or wider the peripheral curves the greater the effect.
